Traffic information is an important component of Transportation Planning.  Data related to the number of vehicles per day using a particular roadway is important for monitoring congestion and roadway performance, and helping to prioritize travel demand and need for projects/improvements.  Average daily traffic is collected in by a number of entities.  Primarily, average daily traffic counts are collected the Departments of Transportation (DOTs) on a cyclical basis.  Some roadways, such as interstates, may have continuous monitoring or annual data collection cycles.  Other roadways may have average daily traffic collected on a five-year cycle.  Local roads are typically monitored by the local government responsible for its maintenance and traffic data may only be collected as needed.
