December 17, 2014 – The City of New Boston will be awarded a $400,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  With the grant dollars and an additional $95,800 in matching funds the city will expand the recreational opportunities in the Sturgeon Bay Campground adjacent to the Mississippi River.

Currently, the park is 8.41 acres in size and will expand by another 0.85 acres.  This will allow for new amenities such as a new bath house, a 0.75-mile asphalt walking path, an Eagle Watch and a campground pavilion, and the improvement of all RV pads to concrete with electrical service and 10 additional pads.  New picnic tables will be provided throughout the campground and pavilion.  The nearly half million dollar project will beautify and improve the city’s greatest asset, the Mississippi riverfront.  Bi-State Regional Commission staff prepared the grant application and assisted the city in its presentation of the project to the DNR.
